The Padka project consists in the contemporary adaptation of local crafts in Transylvania through the reinterpretation of their potential and value. The project is in line with the critical regionalism approach to architecture, where local identity is placed above the universal character of modern design. The designer decided to cooperate with an artisan whose profession is dying out to redesign an object which has barely changed in the past decades: a bench. The major technique involved is corn husk weaving – the material is easy to obtain and process. The main intention behind the design process was to gain an in-depth understanding of the structure and meaning of local elements.
