Dysread Typeface is a variable font inspired by the designer’s dyslexia. She aimed to create an experimental font to exploit the limits of variable fonts in a non-traditional sense. Dysread can move along its axes and become difficult to read, at the same time creating new graphic forms from its characters. This goes against the importance of legibility but also adds a new dimension to the design. To make the concept work, the designer developed a system of proportions for the characters, based on the original 12×12 unit square grid. There are currently 2275 characters in the font family and 7 masters, but the variability within these can be increased. Dysread is more than an experiment: it can be used in both online and print designs. Its name was created by combining the English words “dyslexia” and “read”.
