The designer has started her thesis by stating that “the art of hand‑painted signboards in the Czech Republic has been defeated by cheap large‑format prints”. And she’s right. The traditional craft of hand lettering became nearly extinct over two decades ago. However, in the last few years, young Czechs have developed an interest in non‑industrial, local products. Commercial workshops which offer hand lettering services are a perfect solution for new cafes, restaurants, or deli shops which need unique handwritten boards, signs, or menus. In her project, Petra Dočekalová has analysed the remaining examples of traditional hand lettering and created her own script typefaces basing on and referring to local traditions and handicraft, which at the same time correspond to modern aesthetics.
