The book Sound Forms (Zvukové formy) explores the historical pursuit of visualizing and notating sound, and of assigning it to colours and shapes. From Aristotle, through Ernst Chladni’s sound figures, the musical analyses and theories of Wassily Kandinsky, Zdeněk Pešánek’s colour piano, and other inventions, up to contemporary digital software and audiovisual artists, it traces the path leading to graphic scores, which it maps primarily from the early 20th century to the present. The book concludes with a typology of shapes found in graphic and experimental scores – a catalogue of identified graphemes accompanied by the author’s name, composition, and date. Throughout the book, QR codes link to musical examples, which, together with inserted transparent papers, create an almost interactive experience. The publication is based on original texts forming the theoretical part of the bachelor’s thesis.
